WBLE began live-coverage of South Panola High School football more than a quarter-century ago, when very few radio stations in Mississippi provided high school football fans with live coverage of Friday night football games on a regular basis. Through the years, high school football fans in general, and South Panola fans in particular, have listened to announcers such as Harold McCarley, Bill Trussell, Butch Still, Tom Hamby, Bob Norris and Stan Smythe. Bob Norris had the longest tenure, serving almost twenty-five years on the radio before his death in November, 2007.
The current South Panola WBLE radio crew (which has been in place for several years), is comprised of George Carlson (play-by-play), Steve Wingert (color commentator), Kenny Hopper (computer statistician), Richard Hudson and Tim Christ (spotters), Trey Hamby (videographer), and Cam Coker (production manager).
During WBLE's radio broadcast of South Panola football, the Tigers have been Regional Champions 13 times, North Mississippi Champions 13 times, State Runner-Up 4 times, and State Champions 9 times. And then, in 2010, South Panola ended the season ranked No. 1 in the nation in at least three national prep polls! This is a monumental accomplishment when you consider the tens of thousands of high schools in the nation that play football!
South Panola's dominance in Mississippi high school football since the early 1990's, and now the Tigers’s dominance on a national level, have caused each year's football season to be extended (with one exception) beyond the regular season into the playoffs, thus resulting in more games for our listeners. In fact, in the last 19 seasons, loyal South Panola listeners have been able to listen to radio broadcasts of 267 South Panola football games - an average of 14 games per season.
So listen to South Panola football every Friday night during the football season. For August and September games, air-time is 6:30 p.m., with kick-off at 7:30 p.m. Once October arrives, air-time is 6:00 p.m., with kick-off at 7:00 p.m. This one hour pre-game show includes current information about South Panola, information on the opposing team, and a pre-game interview with South Panola head football coach Lance Pogue. Also, at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday evening during the season, you can listen to a live call-in show with Coach Lance Pogue and Steve Wingert.
